Growing, growing, gone

We sent most of the plants outside "on their holidays" to harden off today, the tomatoes have grown considerably since I last showed you. The cute pictures of YS planting the sweetcorn are irretrievably lost in the great camera disaster, but the results he's got are good. Just after these pictures the chickens (who I am no longer refering to as ladies) pecked off two sweetcorn, uprooted another and pulled a couple of leaves from the tomatoes. Perhaps they heard we had chicken in black bean sauce for dinner? Now where is that air rifle? (only joking - for the moment at least...).

  1. This time of year most of my plants are hardening off, but a few weeks ago I would be taking them out for a 'day trip' every day. I see you are also a fan of the toilet roll tube! It takes me a year to save up enough!!

  3. Yeah for loo roll inners, they're the best for Sweetcorn. Darn Chickens, they're maybe just jealous that you didn't take photos of them and write something nice.

  4. They look great, you'll soon be tucking into some great corn. I didn't know you had chickens ??
Have you done a post on them ?? I am so envious, I want some we both do, but they need looking after daily and we go away for little 2 day breaks every so often.

  5. Chickens actually belong to next door but seem to enjoy our company (and vegetables) more. We look after them when neighbour is away and generally use our garden more for eating / football / cricket practice etc. I think they like a bit of human company.
Toilet rolls are in great demand in this house, for parsnips, sweetcorn, gerbils and robots legs. I'm thinking of trying carrots as these are still my nemisis any ideas if this might work?

  6. I'm not sure that carrots would be suitable for growing in loo rolls, BUT it's always worth a try. When I see them in the garden centre for sale in those little polystyrene containers, I shudder to think about them being transplanted into the ground. I certainly wouldn't pay the price asked and then find that they don't like being disturbed. Let me know if you try it and it works.
